Testimonials

"Dear Mark, Deirdre and Cat --

A much belated and huge thank you for the fabulous music you all provided for our wedding last June. Your performance was a perfect fit for our beautiful settings and the feel we wanted for our wedding.

We were thrilled that you could accomodate the few requests we made (the Lorena McKennit was great!) but we really appreciated your ability to help us figure out what we wanted since we were rather clueless and ambiguous!

We would not hesitate to recommend you to others and would be glad to do so! Thanks to all of you once again for your beautiful music and help making our day as perfect as it was. Thank you!"

"Mark Ungar is a superb musician! He sings, he writes music, he plays guitar, bass, mandolin, and probably a whole bunch of instruments that I don't even know the names for. He and a couple of other musicians, including one of the best hand-drummers in the Bay Area, Deirdre McCarthy, provided the music for our 21st Handfasting (Wedding) Anniversary celebration. They played a whole range from jazzy to pop/rock and many styles in between, with a few stops off in the Celtic Highlands at times. They were also very flexible - despite the usual late start of PST (Pagan Standard Time), Mark and his crew soldiered on with mini flashlights and played in the rising darkness outdoors. We really enjoyed their friendliness and warmth and the wonderful dance music they brought to the event. Highly recommended! Mark Ungar is also a dynamic part of the group "Avalon Rising", whose Celtic Rock numbers defy one NOT to dance, and watch out if Mark and Deirdre are joined by other artists in the combination known as "The Veil"; their debut album "Sophia Speaks" is one of the most powerful albums I have heard. I have never cared for spoken words accompanying music before, but "Sophia Speaks" makes you sit up and listen."

"Dear Mark and Deirdre:
What a delight it was to have your music at our wedding! You two are wonderful musicians, and your style of playing was just perfect with our costume wedding. We loved the mandocello and the bodhran--such gentle, joyous music. Your beautiful Celtic costumes added great flair and richness to the celebration. The mix of Celtic traditional, Van Morrison, and even our favorite Blood Sweat and Tears song, was so much fun--you made us wish you'd never leave!

The ease of working with you, from our very first contact to bidding you farewell at the end of the wedding, helped make our wedding a relaxed affair. Your professionalism put our minds at ease, and yet your flexibility as our plans came together gave us the freedom to plan exactly the wedding we wanted. You made yourselves approachable and accessible, so that we never felt out of touch or that anything about the contract was up in the air. You even maintained contact while on your tour through Europe!

Thank you both for helping make our kooky little event so memorable and so much fun. We'd recommend you to anyone who would forego the stuffy organ and opt for some laughter, joy, and fantastic music on their Big Day.

You have a standing invitation to come by Laughing Goats and tilt a few
pints with us!"

Cheers,

"Dear Mark and More Moose Music,
We just wanted to thank you for the spectacular job you did for the music at our wedding. Even now, more then a year later it is still one of the highlights of the day that our family and guests still mention. I was afraid that I would not be able to find all the types of music that I wanted for the wedding and reception anywhere, let alone from one company. We wanted Celtic/ Renaissance music for the church and dinner while for dancing we wanted both great rock and roll and Irish dance music. Your groups did a wonderful job performing it all, even learning our first dance song which was great. The dance floor was always packed! You and your musicians were a joy to work with. Thank you again for helping make our day so perfect."

Performance Schedule

August 1st, 2nd, 8th, and 9th: Kelly McCubbin’s Golden Hour of Radio - 8pm at The Exit Theater, San Francisco

That’s right – I’m starring (ok, matter of opinion) in a brilliant new play called Kelly McCubbin’s Golden Hour of Radio! (or: the Ukeapocalypse Radio Hour). I’ll be playing “beleaguered announcer” Murray, as well as Risk Management Specialist Endrin Smyzel. The cast is a tremendously talented group, some of whom you know already, the rest of which you should.

This original play, penned by local writers including Rey Zegri and Chad McComber (of Single Entendre fame),  features the hilarious misadventures of a dysfunctional contemporary radio theater company. The second half features an “On Air” performance of an original sci-fi radio script! You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll kiss 15 bucks goodbye!

Save the Dates Now! There will be 4 performances only!

August 1st, 2nd, 8th, and 9th! (For you laymen, that’s the first couple of Friday and Saturday nights in August.)

Where?

The Exit Theater
156 Eddy Street, San Francisco, CA
Tickets $15 and $10

There might be cake! OK, there will be cake. We're bringing it.

Back in the Stone Age -- 15 years ago -- just after the monkeys stopped throwing things at obelisks, there arose out of the ground a great Celtic rock band, and barely to be heard over the chanting of the Druids, was the band name, "Avalon Rising." (As good a creation myth as any.) At one point, there were other people in the band. Now there are these people in the band. Go figure. Step with us --- into the future! Will there be flying cars? No, only us, just like we are today, only it'll be the 19th. Amazing! Astounding! Good thing there's going to be cake.

Come on down and join us in a toast to 15 years of Celtic rock!
